"Relay For Life" Was A Big Success

Agoura Hills, CA – October 3, 2006 – Employers Direct Insurance Company, a direct writer of California workers’ compensation insurance, was the primary sponsor of the 9th Annual Relay for Life of Conejo Valley in support of the American Cancer Society. Employees held a number of fundraising activities leading up to the event including bake sales and events at local restaurants, and the company and employees raised a total of $30,000.

Relay for Life was a 24-hour celebration of hope that took place September 30 and October 1 in Newbury Park. Teams of friends, families, and co-workers took turns walking or running laps – and each team kept at least one team member on the track at all times. This annual fun-filled event raises money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society.

Employers Direct’s employees enthusiastically chose to replace the annual company-sponsored summer picnic by participating in the Relay for Life. Nearly 75 employees gathered September 30-October 1 to support the local community and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Five teams with a minimum of ten people per team were created and chose a theme relating to the overall theme for this year’s event, “Searching for a Cancer-Free Paradise.” All members of the Employers Direct family enjoyed the fun event and said that they hoped to participate in 2007.

Relay for Life started in 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon and avid runner, took the first step of his 24-hour walk/run around a track in Tacoma, Washington. Since 1985, Relay for Life has spread to 4,200 cities in the United States and to eight countries. One man’s action in the fight against cancer has resulted in a worldwide event to eliminate cancer.
