CALIFORNIA'S LEGISTATIVE CALENDAR

The calendar provides important deadlines for the California Legislature.

2008
  • January 1 – Statues take effect
  • January 7 – Legislature reconvenes
  • January 10 – Budget Bill must be submitted by Governor
  • January 18 – Last day for policy committees to meet and report to Fiscal Committees fiscal bills introduced in their house in 2007
  • January 21 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observed
  • January 25 – Last day for any committee to meet and report to the floor bills introduced in their house in 2007, and last day to submit bill requests to the Office of Legislative Counsel
  • January 31 – Last day for each house to pass bills introduced in 2007 in their house
  • February 11 – Lincoln's Birthday observed
  • February 18 – Washington's Birthday observed
  • February 22 – Last day for bills to be introduced
  • March 13 – Spring Recess begins upon adjournment
  • March 24 – Legtislature reconvenes from Spring Recess
  • March 31 – Cesar Chavez Day observed
  • April 18 – Last day for policy committees to meet and report to Fiscal Committees fiscal bills introduced in their house
  • May 2 – Last day for policy committees to meet and report to the floor non-fiscal bills introduced in their house.
  • May 16 – Last day for policy committees to meet prior to June 2.
  • May 23 – Last day for fiscal committees to meet and report to the floor bills introduced in their house, and last day for fiscal committees to meet prior to June 2
  • May 26 – Memorial Day observed
  • May 27-30 – Floor session only - no committee may meet for any purpose
  • June 2 – Committee meetings may resume
  • June 15 – Budget Bill must be passed by midnight
  • June 26 – Last day for a legislative measure to qualify for the Nov. 4 General Election ballot
  • June 27 – Last day for policy committees to meet and report bills
  • July 3 – Summer Recess begins upon adjournment, provided Budget Bill has been passed
  • July 4 – Independence Day observed
  • August 4 – Legislature reconvenes from Summer Recess
  • August 15 – Last day for fiscal committees to meet and report bills to the floor
  • August 18-31 – Floor session only – no committees, other than conference committees and Rules Committee, may meet for any purpose.
  • August 22 – Last day to amend bills on the floor.
  • August 31 – Last day for any bill to be passed, and final Recess begins upon adjournment

    Important Dates Occurring During Final Recess:
  • September 30 – Last day for Governor to sign or veto bills passed by the Legislature before September 1 and in the Governor’s possession on or after September 1
  • November 4 – General Election
  • November 30 – Adjournment Sine Die at midnight
  • December 1 – 12 midnight convening of the 2009-2010 Regular Session

  • January 1 – Statutes take effect
